Training: Finding something that really motivates your dog

When you train your dog you have to find something that motivates them, something they really want and will work for. With Skye that is either a food reward (of any kind really!) or a toy (particularly a tennis ball). Being a Flat Coated Retriever, Skye wants to have a job to do and loves to work. So she really enjoys training sessions!

Amber is different. She will work for treats, but they have to be ones she really likes (such as liver, sausage or cheese)and she isn't really motviated towards a toy. She would do anything for a Jumbone though! We call her our Princess because before she gets in the van she looks to see if the reward you have is worth whatever it is you are asking of her.

Once you know what motivates a particular dog, training is so much easier. Some dogs aren't fussy but others (like our Amber!) are!!
